Overview

This exclusive 13-day luxury walking journey through Japan offers an immersive experience along two of the country’s most historic routes—the ancient pilgrim trails of the Kii Peninsula and the Nakasendo Trail through the Kiso Valley. Starting in Kyoto, renowned for its temples and rich cultural heritage, the journey takes you south to the Kii Mountains where you will discover the origins of three of the Kumano Kodo pilgrim trail and visit two of the three Kumano Sanzan (grand shrines). Highlights of your time on the Kii Peninsula include World-Heritage Listed shrines in Koyasan, Yoshino and Nara, the worn cobble-stone steps of Daimon-zaka and Nachi Falls, and Japan's largest Torii Gate at Oyunohara near Hongu Taisha. After a night to soak in the sites of Osaka's Dotonbori Street, your adventure continues in the Kiso Valley with a bullet-train getting you there in record time. The Nakasendo Trail, once travelled by Samurai, winds its way between beautifully preserved Edo-era post-towns like Magome, Tsumago and Narai, travelling on picturesque forest trails through Kiso Valley's rural towns and mountains. Your Nakasendo Walk ends with a visit to Matsumoto Castle, a fascinating place to learn more about the Samurai culture of Edo-Japan. During your 13 night journey, you have the services of an English-speaking private driver, local guides and exceptional accommodation including boutique luxury hotels and the region's best ryokans with warming Onsen and exquisite kaiseki cuisine.
