Overview

Your journey into the fiords and inlets of the Fiordland National Park takes place onboard the Fiordland Jewel, a custom-built expedition cruise boat sleeping just 18 guests. There are two six night journey options to consider: the first covers the northern fiords including Doubtful and Milford Sounds; the second covers Dusky, Breaksea and Doubtful Sounds. Both are exceptional cruises showcasing the wildlife and mountainous scenery of New Zealand's dramatic south-west coastline. Your journey includes all meals, kayaking and tender boat excursions, and the potential for short walks and fishing. Onboard you'll enjoy gazing at the clear night skies from the hot tub on the top deck. If you want to unplug from modern life and reconnect with the wonders of nature, this is just the ticket.

4Location & Access

Location & Access

You'll start and finish your journey in Te Anau and/or Manapouri (both two hours drive from Queenstown). Ground transfers are included between Manapouri and Doubtful Sound and/or Milford Sound. If you choose the Doubtful-Dusky Sound cruise, a one way heli transfer is included between Te Anau and Preservation Inlet/Dusky Sound. Walk into Luxury can arrange private transfers from Queenstown or Glenorchy to Te Anau/Manapouri to meet your included transfers, or let us fly you directly to/from the ship's helipad.

Doubtful Sound to Milford Sound Itinerary

Day 1

Your adventure will start just after lunch with a boat transfer across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, where your coach will be waiting to transfer you across Wilmot Pass. Here you see dramatic views of Doubtful Sound and the surrounding peaks and fiords. On arrival at Deep Cove, you will board Fiordland Jewel and meet your crew for the coming days. Discover the beautiful landscape and calm waters of Doubtful Sound today as you spot wildlife and relax on the deck. Waterfalls are everywhere and are fringed by rainforest and rugged peaks. Dinner onboard tonight is a chance to enjoy the local seafood caught by the crew.

Doubtful Sound cruise Fiordland Discovery

Day 2 - Day 5

For the next four days, you'll cruise the inlets and islands of Doubtful Sound and, subject to weather, also discover Nancy Sound, George, Caswell and Bligh Sounds. Activity options include wildlife spotting, with bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, whales and penguins all inhabiting the area, and exploring the calm waters by kayak and tender boat. Rare birdlife is also enjoyed by guests with the Royal Albatross - which has the longest wingspan in the wold - regularly spotted from the boat. There is the chance to fish for a local catch, and watch the crew dive for lobster and crayfish to enjoy at lunch or dinner. In the evenings, stargazing is popular on the top deck with no light pollution making for clear starry skies.

Day 6

Today is the day we enter Milford Sound and cruise past world-renowned Mitre Peak. The deck will be popular as we sail past waterfalls and mountain peaks including the Cascade Range, Mt Pembroke, Bridal Veil Falls, Fairy Falls and Bowen Falls. After a day of scenic cruising which that is sure to fill up your camera, you'll arrive at Deepwater Basin in Milford Sound where the boat anchors for the night.

Day 7

This morning watch the sunrise over Milford Sound while enjoying breakfast. Enjoy the peaceful surrounds of Deepwater Basin before returning to Milford foreshore to disembark at 9.00 am. Guests are transferred back to Manapouri, but Walk into Luxury can arrange a convenient direct transfer for you by air or road to your next destination on your NZ journey.
