INSIDER TIPS & MORE JAPAN WALKS

Ropeway access to Japan's Alps and when to hike in the mountainous regions of Japan. Read out tips.

Inside tip: One of the great things about Japan's Alps is how accessible they are with ropeways making is easy to tick off a summit in a day. At places like Shin-Hotaka, you can ride the ropeway from the first or second station to the top reaching an altitude of 2200 metres before you start your hike. It then becomes very reasonable to reach Nishi-ho Sanso mountain hut and the Maruyama viewpoint of Mt Hotaka in a 4 hour return walk before riding the ropeway back down.

When to hike in Japan's Alps & Mountain Trails: Japan's seasons vary region to region, so there are a few considerations when timing a walking holiday in Japan especially if you plan to visit more than one trail.
