Melbourne and surrounding areas including Wilsons Promontory, Mornington Peninsula and the Grampians experience a temperate but variable climate, with summers generally warm and winters cool but mild. The Wilsons Prom is about 5 degrees cooler than Melbourne in summer, making it an ideal year-round walking destination. If you visit Victoria in Spring you’ll find wildflowers blooming along the coastal heathland, and whales migrating along the Wilsons Prom coastline. Whales are able to be spotted on the Great Ocean Road from May to October, and around Bellarine Peninsula from July.
Further inland the Snowy Mountains has an alpine climate with four distinct seasons and snow in winter. Hiking is best in late Spring, Summer and Autumn, with wildflowers blooming a bit later here than other parts of Victoria – January is peak wildflower season in the mountains.
