Tasmania experiences a temperate maritime climate influenced by the surrounding ocean. With milder temperatures and longer daylight hours, October to April is the best time for hiking, cruising, wildlife spotting, and other outdoor activities.

Temperatures

  • Summer (December to February): Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), with nighttime temperatures around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F).
  • Autumn (March to May): Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), with nighttime temperatures cooling to 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).
  • Winter (June to August): Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), with nighttime temperatures dropping to 0°C to 5°C (32°F to 41°F). Frosts and some snowfall are common in inland areas.
  • Spring (September to November): Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), with nighttime temperatures warming to 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).

Rainfall

Tasmania's weather is changeable with moderate rainfall spread throughout the year. Winter tends to be the wettest season. Temperatures can drop low enough for snowfall in the central highlands and other mountainous areas, particularly between June and August. The amount of snowfall each year varies and is more frequent and heavier at higher elevations, including Kunanyi-Mount Wellington near Hobart and Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
