Overview
Nikko, located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, experiences a continental climate characterized by warm summers and cold winters with significant snowfall. The city's elevation contributes to its cooler temperatures compared to nearby regions. Unlike some other parts of Japan, the Summer months in Nikko make for excellent hiking. From June to September the skies are clear and the weather warm, but the higher altitude means the temperatures are still pleasant and not humid. Any time from April to November is a great time to visit Nikko National Park, with all trails in good condition and all mountain roads open.

Nikko receives substantial precipitation throughout the year, averaging approximately 2,229 mm (87.8 inches) annually. The wettest months are July and September, with rainfall reaching up to 328 mm (12.9 inches) in July. December is typically the driest month, averaging around 69 mm (2.7 inches) of precipitation.
