Overview
The Kii Peninsula, home to the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The area is known for its lush forests and abundant rainfall, contributing to its rich natural and cultural heritage.
Temperatures
- Summer (June to August): Average daytime highs range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F), with nighttime lows between 20°C and 24°C (68°F to 75°F).
- Winter (December to February): Average daytime temperatures range from 3°C to 7°C (37.4°F to 44.6°F), with a small chance of snow on the Nakahechi route of Kumano Kodo. The mountainous area around Koyasan can be colder with more snow.
- Spring (March to May): Temperatures range from 3°C to 20°C (37.4°F to 68°F).
- Autumn (September to November): Temperatures range from 15°C to 23°C (59°F to 73.4°F).
Rainfall
The Kii Peninsula is one of Japan's wettest regions, with annual precipitation exceeding 2,000 mm (79 inches). The rainy season occurs from early June to mid-July, followed by a typhoon season in September, both contributing to the high rainfall totals.
