Fiordland, home to the renowned Milford Sound, is one of New Zealand's wettest regions, characterized by a temperate rainforest climate. The area experiences high levels of rainfall, contributing to its lush, dense forests and spectacular waterfalls. Visitors should be prepared for wet and changing weather conditions year-round. October to April is generally the best time for hiking, but May and September are also options.

Temperatures

  • Summer (December to February): Average highs of 19.5°C (67°F) and lows of 10.7°C (51°F). November and December bring increasingly fine conditions with crisp mornings and nights. Summer months average around 20°C but the evenings can be a little cooler.
  • Autumn (March to May): Average highs range from 17°C to 12°C (63°F to 54°F), with lows between 9°C and 4°C (48°F to 39°F).
  • Winter (June to August): Average highs of 9.3°C (49°F) and lows of 1.6°C (35°F).
  • Spring (September to November): Average highs range from 12°C to 17°C (54°F to 63°F), with lows between 4°C and 9°C (39°F to 48°F).
