What to pack for a lodge and eco-camp-based walk in South Australia's outback

Your main luggage will be stored at the Homestead. You will be given a soft carry bag to place your overnight gear for the eco-camp nights; this will be transported between camps. On the track each day, you will carry a day pack (small backpack) with your lunch and snacks, water, waterproof and warm layers, and other personal items.

What to bring

  • A small backpack to carry the items you need on the trail (e.g. snacks, water, protective layers and personal items)
  • Wet weather gear in case of rain - a lightweight waterproof jacket with a hood is recommended
  • A large water bottle or bladder (minimum one litre recommended - guides carry additional water for topping up)
  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with mid-to-high ankle support are recommended due to the uneven terrain; to avoid blisters, boots should be comfortable and worn in
  • Comfortable, layered hiking clothing – we recommend long loose-fitting clothing for sun and wind protection and to shield your legs and arms from stray branches
  • Light long hiking pants or shorts (quick-dry zip-off leg pants are ideal) and light wicking or cotton shirts, preferably long-sleeved
  • Gaiters are recommended
  • Walking poles if you prefer to use them
  • Change of clothes and lightweight shoes/sandals for evenings at the Homestead and camps
  • Suitable warm layers, gloves, scarf and beanie or woollen hat for cool evenings and early mornings
  • Sleepwear, spare socks and underwear
  • Swimwear to swim in the Homestead pool (optional)
  • Sun protection, including a peaked or brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses (you will be exposed to the sun for the majority of your walking time)
  • Prescription glasses and/or any medication you may require (including an EPI pen)
  • Personal toiletries in small containers, including insect repellent
  • Your camera and/or mobile phone, binoculars for birdwatching, chargers, a small torch, and spare batteries (charging facilities are only available at the Homestead on nights one and four, so solar chargers are recommended)
  • Bank card (or preferred device) for purchasing personal items and incidentals
