When is the best time to hike in Kamikochi and Japan's Northern Alps

The best time to hike in Kamikochi and Japan's Northern Alps is from late-April to early-November for valley hiking, or June to September for higher alpine hikes

Shin Hotaka Ropeway Deck

The hiking season in Japan's Northern Alps including Kamikochi and Chubu-Sangaku National Park is from late April to early November. Kamikochi is closed outside this time due to the inaccessible mountain roads that experience high snowfall. The best time to hike in Kamikochi is late April to early November, with some preferring the Autumn months for the scenic display of red leaves against the snowy mountain backdrop. It is worth noting though, if you are planning to hike the Kamikochi Valley floor, such as the walks around Kappa bridge, Myojin Pond and Taisho Pond, the season is longer than if you plan to hike at higher altitude. Except for experienced mountain climbers, alpine hikes like Karasawa Cirque or Nishi-Hotaka are only recommended from May or June to September, when they are less impacted by snow cover.

If you are visiting Japan outside the northern Alps hiking season, it is worth noting that you can still experience some alpine viewpoints. We recommend Shin-Hotaka Ropeway as a year-round option, with its two observation decks at 2200 metres offering sweeping views of the Northern Alps at any time of year.

If you are planning to combine your Japan Alps hike with a walk on the Nakasendo Trail, we recommend late April to early November, or June to September if you plan to include the alpine hike at Nishi-Hotaka in your journey.
