When is the best time to hike in Nikko

The best time to hike in Nikko is from April to November, from mid Spring to the end of Autumn. Unlike some parts of Japan, the Summer months in Nikko make for excellent hiking, though many visit in October and November for the Autumn leaves or in Spring to walk among the alpine wildflowers.

Nikko Akechidaira Plateau Visit Nikko

Unlike some other parts of Japan, the Summer months in Nikko make for excellent hiking. From June to September the skies are clear and the weather warm, but the higher altitude means the temperatures are still pleasant and not humid like it can be elsewhere in Japan. If you enjoy hiking, any time from April to November is a great time to visit Nikko National Park, with all trails in good condition and all mountain roads open.

It is worth understanding that Nikko is comprised of alpine and semi-alpine areas, so the more remote trails around Oku-Nikko including those commencing from Yumoto Onsen (1500 metres above sea level) can be up to 5 degrees cooler than at Lake Chuzenji or Kinugawa River. This means if you are visiting Nikko outside the typical hiking season, it is possible to still enjoy a number of lakeside and river walks and even the Senjogahara Wetlands hike, but crampons may be recommended when snow is on the ground.

If you enjoy spectacular wildflowers and foliage, consider timing your visit for alpine wildflowers which are visible along the trails around Nikko in summer. Some of the colourful displays to look forward to are the cherry blossom (in April), azaleas (in May), and day lillies (in June and July). Autumn is perhaps the most popular time to visit Nikko with some of Japan's most renowned Autumn images captured here. The Akechidaira Plateau and trees lining the forests around Lake Chuzenji are particularly vibrant in October and November.
