Hike the dramatic volcanic landscape of Ryuo-kyo Gorge, following the Kinugawa River as it snakes it way between two old Onsen towns near Nikko

1Overview
Overview

The Ryuo-kyo Valley walk trail offers a scenic six-kilometre trek above Kinugawa River, connecting the hot spring towns of Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen near Nikko. Shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the landscape has been carved by the river's strong currents. The mostly gentle trail follows the gorge from the trailhead near Kinugawa Onsen to Shiraiwa, with a few short climbs. About halfway, you'll cross the Musasabi Suspension Bridge, offering awe-inspiring views down the valley. The trail ends near the unique Kameana potholes, one of many scenic photo spots on this favourite Nikko hike.
