A fascinating introduction to the Nakasendo Trail, walk from Magome to Tsumago in the picturesque Kiso Valley, discovering two of Japan's best-preserved post-towns
The Magome to Tsumago walk along the Nakasendo Trail offers a scenic journey through Japan’s historic Kiso Valley, connecting two beautifully preserved Edo-period post towns. This nine-kilometre trail winds through forested hills, rice paddies, and quiet villages, with gentle ascents and descents, making it accessible to most walkers. Along the way, you’ll encounter traditional tea houses, waterfalls, and well-marked paths, with occasional glimpses of the distant mountains. The walk culminates in Tsumago-juko, where cobblestone streets and wooden inns transport you back in time, with some buildings constricted in the 1600s. With a private guide and driver in support, today offers a fascinating introduction to the history of the Nakasendo Samurai trail.
