Explore the sacred history, ancient pilgrimage routes and breathtaking vistas of Mount Fuji visiting Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Shrine, Okuniwa and the 5th Station

1Overview
Overview

This private, four-hour guided tour offers a unique exploration of Mount Fuji and significant pilgrim history of Japan's highest peak. The journey begins with a visit to the ancient Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, thought to have its origins in 100AD, before an altar was built at the site in 788AD to halt the frequent eruptions of Mt. Fuji. The majestic cedar-lined approach to the altar features lanterns that create an atmospheric glow against the backdrop of the surrounding forest. The shrine is at the Yoshida trailhead, which is the traditional approach to Mt Fuji for pilgrims. From here, continue your journey to Mount Fuji, stopping at Okuniwa Nature Park or Okiwa on the Ochudo trail for a one-hour walk. Both are two-thirds of the way up the mountain, and incorporate lush alpine meadows, volcanic rock formations and ancient forest with panoramic views of the summit. Today's experience ends with a visit to Mount Fuji 5th Station, which is at an elevation of 2300 metres and offers views of the surrounding mountains and lakes, and - clouds permitting - the summit.
