Discover the significant cultural sites of Koyasan on a private guided tour featuring visits to Kongobu-ji Temple, Okunoin Cemetery and the very moving Lantern Hall

1Overview
Overview

Be led by a private tour guide on a walking tour of Koyasan including the town's most significant cultrual sites: Kongobu-ji temple, Okunoin Cemetery and the Lantern Hall. Kongobu-ji is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, founded by the monk Kobo Daishi, who lays to rest under eternal watch at Okunoin. The grounds of Kongobu-ji are also worth visiting to see its zen rock garden, which is the largest in Japan. As you approach Okunoin Cemetery, you will pass the markers of the Choisi-Michi pilgrim trail, which represent the five Buddhist elements of earth, water, fire, air and space. Here you can follow in the footsteps of Kobo Daishi on a guided walk through the cemetery, which is lined by ancient cedar trees and lanterns, finishing at the moving Lantern Hall. The feeling upon entering the hall is hard to describe, and sure to be a special moment of your Japan journey.
