Arguably the finest section of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route, this private guided walk to Hongu Taisha is one steeped in spiritual significance and natural beauty

1Overview
Overview

Part of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route, the Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha section of this famed pilgrim trail features ancient cobblestone and natural paths, passing through ancient cedar forests and rural mountainous landscapes. Beginning at Hosshinmon-oji, a gate of spiritual awakening, the trail traverses moss-covered stone steps and gentle ridges dotted with historic Oji shrines, where pilgrims once paused for worship. This deeply reflective journey offers sweeping views of the Kii Mountains and a glimpse of traditional rural life before reaching the holy site of the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine - one of Kumano Sanzan grand shrines. Conclude your walk by following the trail from here to Oyu-nohara, the site of the original Hongu Taisha and home to the largest Torii Gate in Japan.
