1. Best access to a national park or wilderness area from a lodge or wilderness retreat
For us travel is about time in nature and discovering new landscapes, so it’s no surprise that we have a lot of lodge partners that are nestled within and alongside national parks. These lodges make it easy to wake up and step into some of Australia and New Zealand's most impressive parks and wilderness areas.
Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef, WA - Ningaloo's renowned eco-camp is nestled within Cape Range National Park with Ningaloo Reef on its doorstep. It’s only a few metres from your Wilderness Tent to the sand, so you can be snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters before breakfast. For the ultimate Ningaloo day trip, you can swim with the whale sharks on a full day cruise with transfers to/from Tantabiddi boat ramp included from the lodge. The lodge’s excursions to Mandu Mandu Gorge and Yardi Creek – where the rare black-footed rock wallabies live – are also worth adding to your itinerary.
The Lindis, South Island, NZ - This architectural masterpiece is located about two hours from Queenstown, nestled at the base of the scenic Ahuriri Valley. Surrounding mountain peaks like Ben Avon are waiting to be explored on foot or by e-bike, and you can try your hand at flyfishing in the Ahuriri River. The snaking landscape creates one of the most unique natural settings we've encountered, and horse-riding down the valley is another great way to take it all in.
Silky Oaks Lodge, Daintree, QLD - One of the Baillie Lodges, this luxury resort overlooks the beautiful Mossman River in Queensland's Daintree Rainforest. Guided short walks and other activities in Daintree National Park are available from the lodge, making for easy access to one of Australia’s great wilderness areas.
Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef, QLD - While there are many iconic lodges on the Great Barrier Reef, Orpheus gets our vote for the ease of access to great snorkeling and kayaking opportunities right from the front of the lodge. Hazard Bay, which is known for its white sand and fringing reef teeming with marine life, is our pick for snorkelling straight from the beach. Orpheus is a newly-crowned member of Luxury Lodges of Australia.
Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef - Another Great Barrier Reef luxury lodge with excellent direct access is Lizard Island. Snorkelling the fringing reef from the beach couldn’t be easier with motorised dinghies available to help guests access different bays around the Island. There are also short walks accessible on foot from the lodge, offering elevated views over the Island and National Park.
Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, SA - Tucked away in the far western corner of Kangaroo Island, the recently reopened Southern Ocean Lodge is perched on a clifftop and surrounded by Flinders Chase National Park. Enjoy clifftop walks from your front door and ever-present Southern Ocean views wherever you go within the lodge.
Pretty Beach House, Bouddi National Park NSW - With Bouddi National Park on its doorstep, Pretty Beach House offers accessible hiking and biking opportunities on New South Wales's Central Coast paired with luxury comforts. The Lodge is the perfect base for ticking off the Bouddi Coastal Trail and Walk into Luxury can arrange a local guide and transfers to complete your trip. Shorter walks to picture-perfect beaches in the National Park can be accessed on foot from the lodge.

2. Best local food and wine experience
Food and wine are an important part of the luxury lodge experience with local produce another way to get to know the region and its environment. These lodges champion local food and wine and know the value a great dining experience can bring.
Pretty Beach House, NSW - The quality of the dining at Pretty Beach House is exceptional. We love that the lodge's intimate nature allows for an interactive open kitchen. It's a real treat having the chef show you today’s ocean catch and freshly picked vegetable options before they’re prepared for you.
Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses, NZ - Come for the Tree Houses, and stay for the gourmet cuisine featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients from the Lodge's garden and local farms and suppliers. Run by a family of passionate foodies, this hidden Kaikoura gem is sure to impress.
Saffire Freycinet, TAS - Among the many reasons to stay at Saffire, Palate restaurant offers one of Australia’s finest dining experiences. The restaurant is renowned for its local produce ranging from freshly shucked oysters and deep-sea fish to grass-fed beef and lamb, best enjoyed with a perfectly paired premium Tasmanian wine. For another foodie highlight, join Saffire's oyster farm experience to taste some freshly shucked oysters plucked from Tasmania's east coast waters.
Sequoia Lodge, SA - This adults-only retreat in the Adelaide Hills celebrates South Australia's premium wines and local produce with dining available in the intimate dining room or in your suite if preferred. An excellent local wine list is complemented by the regular winemaker tastings hosted in the guest lounge, and cheese tastings are another way to taste the region. Chef-hatted Hardy's Verandah Restaurant, located next door at sister property Mt Lofty Estate, completes the locally-inspired dining options at Sequoia.
Kingsford the Barossa – The Kingsford offers exceptional dining in a picture-perfect setting with Barossa produce and wines showcased. The 7-course dinner menu at Orleana is a standout, and a favourite memory from our team's recent visit to the Barossa. Salter Brothers Hospitality have overseen the evolution of the dining experience at Kingsford following its acquisition of the historic property in 2024.
Flockhill Lodge, New Zealand- The brand new Sugarloaf restaurant at Flockhill Lodge is already receiving praise with the chef's table experience highly recommended. The atmospheric restaurant showcases local produce and vegetables grown onsite.
COMO The Treasury - Wildflower is the rooftop restaurant at the wonderful COMO The Treasury, a boutique hotel and wellness retreat in Perth. Wildflower has cemented itself as a must-do dining experience for WA locals and visitors alike, with the Aboriginal seasons and native ingredients celebrated together with West Australian produce. Book ahead to enjoy the degustation menu with wine matches.
The Louise - Another Barossa favourite, the Louise is one of the great food and wine lodges in Australia, with Appellation service a well-considered degustation menu reflecting the region’s community of winemakers, farmers and growers. Each dish is paired with a premium local wine, creating a culinary journey of the Barossa without leaving the comfort of the lodge.

INSIDER TIP
The best destination dining experiences get booked up in advance, so it pays to plan ahead. Our Journey Designers will secure recommended dining options at the time of booking your suite.
3. Best destination dining experience
Jetty Pavilion at Huka Lodge, NZ – While there is no bad table at Huka Lodge, some are that little bit extra special. Several unique destination dining locations are dotted throughout the property - from riverside dining in the Jetty Pavilion to a table in the impressive underground Wine Cellar surrounded by magnums of vintage Champagne.
Dune Top dinner at Longitude
131°, NT - Dining alfresco under the stars at Longitude is a must, and the Dune Top pavilion is the place to do it. Enjoy the sunset view from your private alcove as you dine with butler-style service throughout the evening. The front-row view of
Uluru and Kata Tjuta makes this a dining experience to remember.
Clifftop dining at El Questro Homestead - A private clifftop dinner overlooking Chamberlain Gorge is a highlight of any stay at El Questro Homestead, and part of the generous lodge inclusions. Prized local Barramundi and native ingredients are regularly featured on the menu, which changes daily.
Black Diamond Experience atThe Lindis - This special high-country private dining experience begins with a guided horseback ride, walk or heli flight to a secluded corner of the Ahuriri Valley where a glass of chilled champagne and a selection of canapes await at The Lindis' 'black diamond' picnic hut. A three-course picnic platter or chef-hosted barbeque lunch can be arranged to enjoy overlooking the valley.
The Wine Room at Kingsford the Barossa - We have seen a few wine cellars in our time but nothing quite prepared us for the Wine Vault at Kingsford the Barossa. From the private wine rooms celebrating iconic local and global wine brands, to the custom wood table and sheer length of the main vault, it is a room that impresses and the perfect location for that special destination dinner.
Dining by the River at Mount Mulligan - Get back to nature with a fireside dinner on the banks of the river at Mount Mulligan with a stary sky above. Your personal waiter will look after you with blankets and a warming glass of red while you dine privately away from other guests.

4. Best couple's villa with a private pool or hot tub
There's nothing that spells holiday quite like that first poolside drink with a view or sinking into your private hot tub. Here are our top Australian and New Zealand lodges with a private pool or outdoor spa.
Makambo Loft, Capella Lodge, Lord Howe Island - Although the Lidgbird Pavilion is larger and has that incredible view from bed (featured below), the Makambo Loft is an ideal couple's retreat with its corner plunge pool perfectly positioned to catch the afternoon sun on Mount Gower. Two e-bikes are reserved for guests of the Makambo Loft so you can explore the island together at your leisure.
Chief Suite, Spicers Sangoma Retreat, NSW - Sangoma's 122 sqm Chief Suite features a private heated magnesium plunge pool on its deck, which is surrounded by gum trees and overlooks the valley. We can't think of a better way to relax after a big day than with a soak here and the breeze on your skin.
Daintree
Pavilion, Silky Oaks Lodge, QLD - Families and private groups will love the
luxurious Daintree Pavilion's separate bedroom wings, wrap-around rainforest
views and open atrium with a generous tiered pool and plunge spa. Enjoy the
birdsong of the Daintree from this private pool oasis.
Osprey
Suite, Southern Ocean Lodge, SA - The one-of-a-kind Osprey Suite showcases
270° ocean and wilderness views, which are ever-present whether relaxing in the
sunken lounge, your oversized bath or soaking in the horizon-edge pool. A
special place to stay and one of Australia's best 'rooms'.
Pod,
The Lindis, NZ - This may seem like an odd inclusion as the Pods at the
Lindis are not as spacious as a typical villa, and they feature an outdoor tub
- not a hot tub. We hope you'll agree though, the exceptional quality and view
from the Lindis Pods make it a necessary inclusion for those seeking a private
escape into nature with an outdoor soak at the day's end.
One
Bedroom Private Lodge, Spicers Peak Lodge, QLD - The spacious one-bedroom
lodge at Spicers Peak offers privacy and the kind of valley views that will
have you relaxing in your new natural setting in no time. The private heated
plunge pool is perched overlooking the native bushland and valley below - heaven.
Windward
Pavilion, Qualia, QLD - The north-facing open-plan pavilions at qualia
feature a private deck and infinity-edge plunge pool overlooking the Coral Sea
and are a favourite among honeymooners.
The
Pavilion, Lizard Island, QLD - The one-bedroom private pavilion features
unique 270-degree views with its wrap-around deck and infinity pool overlooking
the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Although the Pavilion gets our vote for
the best accommodation on Lizard Island for a couple, if you value stepping
onto the sand from your front door in the morning, the Beachfront Suite is
another great choice.
King Billy Suite, Cradle Mountain Lodge, TAS - At the end of a day hiking to Marion’s Lookout on
Cradle Mountain or circuiting Dove lake, soak away any sore muscles in the
private outdoor hot tub belonging to the one-of-a-kind King Billy Suite at
Cradle Mountain Lodge. The crisp air and wilderness setting adds to the
experience.

5. Best lodges for hiking
It's no coincidence that some of these lodges have been hand-picked by our Founder as the base of some of our signature walks. As well as their proximity to world-class trails that traverse some of our region's most diverse landscapes, these properties offer a level of luxury comfort that's unexpected in such remote locations.

Blanket Bay Lodge offers easy access to the Routeburn Track (the eastern end
where Routeburn Falls are located) and picturesque Queenstown trails.
El

Pumphouse

connection with nature is ever-present at this wonderful wilderness lodge. It

drink and dinner by the lake awaits.
Longitude
131°, NT - If you can tear yourself away from your Luxury Tent, Longitude

Sounds, this Luxury Lodge of New Zealand is perfectly

Fiordland Lodge, NZ - Access three of New Zealand's Great Walks from this luxury lodge, including the Kepler and Milford Tracks and the western end of the Routeburn Track (Key Summit). Awaroa
Lodge, NZ - With only walk-in or water access, this is the quintessential
walker's lodge, nestled in native vegetation on the Abel Tasman Coastal Track
at the top of New Zealand's South Island. While not an all-inclusive luxury
lodge, the ensuite bedrooms are very comfortable and the restaurant has
everything you'll need to refuel on your Abel Tasman hike.

11. Best family-friendly luxury lodge or resort
We think luxury lodges that cater to families offer a much-needed option in the Australia and New Zealand luxury travel space, so we gratefully acknowledge these deserving winners.
Mt
Mulligan Lodge, QLD - This luxury lodge is a three-hour drive inland
from Cairns, and offers a unique adventure for families with riverside water
sports and buggy tours on offer. The lodge excels at warm outback hospitality,
and the two-bedroom Outback Pavilions are just perfect for families. The pool
will be a hit with the kids too.
Bullo River Station, NT - Located in the Kimberley, just across the WA border in the Territory, Bullo River is as remote as they come but surprisingly easy to access from Kununurra. It's the perfect outback lodge for the family, with no minimum age and activities ranging from kayaking or boating down the river, gorge walks and watching the cattle dogs, to toasting marshmallows under the stars on the bonfire at night. The staff here are exceptional and make every effort to win over the kids each day with fun options and personalised service.
Kingsford the Barossa – The Kingsford might seem a surprising choice, being a wine-country retreat that has a big focus on its food and wine experience, but there is much more on offer here that makes it a great pick for a family stay. The property features ATV and on-foot adventures aplenty, with riverside picnics a popular option that can be arranged for family groups. The main pool is shaded by peppermint trees, and if you book a valley view pool villa the kids can enjoy their very own heated plunge pool year-round on your villa terrace. If all else fails, head to the unique underground bowling alley for a friendly game of kegel bowling.
Orpheus
Island Resort, QLD - Orpheus Island is a firm favourite for luxe-loving
families visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Children of all ages are welcome at
Orpheus, and hosted activities cater for the whole family. Snorkelling and boat
trips keep active kids busy, but it's just as easy to relax with little ones
here with the vast lawns and calm waters in front of the resort.
Hapuku
Lodge and Treehouses, NZ - Stay in a two-bedroom treehouse, or the Olive
House for larger families, at Hapuku Lodge. Located on a deer farm, there is
plenty of wildlife for the kids to discover here - Bertha the pig is a
favourite resident. The kids can get their hands dirty helping the gardener in
the veggie patch and later, when they dine at the pass, they'll know just where
the chef has sourced his produce. It's an interactive kid-friendly space the
whole family will love.
Rosewood
Cape Kidnappers, NZ - The hilltop family villas are perfect for a family of
four, and activities at The Farm are great for kids. There is a big pool, lots
of rolling green hills to run around on, and not unexpectedly some fun farm
activities. We recommend taking a Can-AM buggy tour along the Hawke's Bay coast
and enjoying a beach picnic and swim.

12. Best new lodge opening, addition or renovation in 2025
We all love discovering something new while travelling. It's a chance to be surprised, and impressed. This category features some new gems plus existing favourites that we think should be on your list to rediscover post-renovation or extension.
Flockhill Lodge - In January 2025 the new Sugarloaf Restaurant opened at Flockhill Lodge, the final step in the evolution of Flockhill from a private Homestead to a multi-faceted luxury lodge. The new Flockhill Villas completed in 2024 make it possible for solo travellers and couples to stay at the in-demand lodge, with the spacious villas offering views of the surrounding mountains. Located near Arthur’s Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, just 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch, Flockhill is on our 2025 travel list.
Huka Lodge - The much-anticipated $25 million refurbishment and additions at Huka Lodge were completed earlier this year with the first guests welcomed to the new-look lodge in March 2025. The upgraded guest spaces include a thoughtful refurbishment of guest suites and the restaurant, plus an expansion of the terrace and outdoor dining spaces. A brand new wellness area features two treatment rooms, a gym, sauna, ice-bucket shower and plunge pool.
The Lodges at Bells at Killcare -
Sister
property of Pretty
Beach House, we have long enjoyed the dining and service at Bells at
Killcare and now there is an exceptional new accommodation option soon to open
at the property. The brand-new two-bedroom, three-storey private lodges will
offer coastal views in an eco-sanctuary setting with mountain bikes included to
explore the area. A stay here includes daily breakfast and dinner, with a
choice of a la carte dining or chef's tasting menu at night.

13. Best glamping accommodation
A great glamping lodge can mean something different to each person; from remote and rustic accommodation surrounded by pristine nature, to luxury eco-camps more akin to a lodge than a camp. While our list is varied – reflecting the range of qualities our team and clients have come to love – each property offers an exceptional experience in its own right.
Spicers Sangoma Retreat - A long-time favourite, Spicers Sangoma Retreat sets the benchmark for well-designed glamping accommodation in Australia blending supreme comfort and a luxe fit-out, with sliding glass and rollable canvas walls that invite the outside in. This is the perfect spot for some time in nature, with the Blue Mountains on your doorstep.
Marramarra Lodge - A Hawkesbury River retreat nestled in nature, the villas at Marramarra offer all the expected luxury comforts in a remote wilderness setting with the lodge only accessible by boat. Choose between a Peninsula Tent perched atop a hill with a private view of the river, or the spacious bungalows tucked away in native bushland.
Sal Salis - The glamping tents at Sal Salis are all about the unique beach setting, with the lodge's location in Cape Range National Park making it possible for guests to be on the sand and snorkelling the reef before breakfast. The tents feature large hammocks and outdoor showers, and the sound of waves rolling can be heard throughout the day, making it ever-so-easy to relax into the beach setting. In the evenings, meet fellow guests for sunset drinks and canapes on the main deck and settle in for dinner under the stars.
Bamurru Plains - Bamurru is one of Australia's original luxury lodges, bringing a safari-like experience to Australia when it opened its doors in 2006. Almost 20-years on, it continues to offer an exceptional experience for guests with all-inclusive dining and daily activities like air-boating on the wetlands and safari drives to spot local wildlife. Day trips to Kakadu National Park can be included in your itinerary from Bamurru making this the ultimate Top End adventure.
Longitude 131° - An obvious inclusion in this category, Longitude is perhaps Australia's most-recognisable luxury lodge and its tents with front-row view of Uluru are the stuff glamping dreams are made of. We love the little touches at Longitude from the included in-tent bar to the turndown service which includes setting up a swag on your deck for stargazing and a chance to sleep under the stars.
Mount Mulligan Lodge - Accommodation options at Mount Mulligan range from plush 'outback suites' with sliding glass walls and deep-soaking tubs on your deck, to the more modest 'outback tents' that are tucked away in a private area from the main lodge. The solar-powered tents are a great value option with all-inclusive dining and lodge activities included at half the price of the main lodge rooms. The outback tents feature an in-tent bar and snacks, shower and flushing toilet, and can accommodate a family of four with two bunk-beds in a separate tent annex.
Kimberley Coastal Camp, WA - The glamping tents at Kimberley Coastal Camp are comfortable but rustic, in keeping with the setting at this very-remote Kimberley camp. It's all about the experience here - join your fishing guide for a morning boat trip to catch a barramundi, cool down in the lodge pool, or enjoy a glass of bubbles while your chef prepares lunch on a deserted Kimberley island beach. The options are endless.
Berkeley River Lodge - Berkeley River is located on the remote north-Kimberley coast. Staying here unlocks a number of unique experiences exclusive to lodge guests from river cruises surrounded by towering gorge walls to heli experiences to nearby rock-art sites and waterfalls. However you spend the day, returning to a modern glamping tent with view of the Kimberley Coast will be the perfect way to end it.

This year's list features some hotly anticipated lodge refurbishments and additions, with several established luxury lodges and travel providers investing in new upgrades in 2026.
Ghan & Indian Pacific - An exciting addition is coming to Australia's greatest rail journeys, with new ultra-luxe suites set to be unveiled in April 2026 on the Ghan and Indian Pacific. The new Aurora and Australis suites will offer a new level of luxury with separate bedroom and lounge area with dedicated picture window for watching the outback pass by on your cross-country rail journey.
Bullo River Station - Hot off the heels of its addition to the Luxury Lodges of Australia portfolio, Bullo River is set to close for an extensive refurbishment in 2026. Design details are yet to be released, but we expect the end result will be top quality with the Landsmith Collection - who also own Voyager Estate - at the helm. Travel this year to snap up one of Australia's best outback experiences at special 'pre-renovation' rates.
Saffire Freycinet - A new super-villa will be added to Saffire Freycinet on Tasmania's East Coast, creating a three-bedroom option for families and private groups. The new villa will feature a private heated pool, outdoor spa bath and fireplace. Rates are expected to start at A$10,000 per night, with capacity to accommodate six adults plus children.
Kingsford the Barossa - A new guest wing is expected to be added in 2026, along with a dedicated Day Spa, to expand the offering at Kingsford the Barossa. Smaller upgrades to the grounds including the addition of a firepit and upgrade to the iconic Kingsford Bush Bath are also on the cards this year.
Mount Mulligan - Mount Mulligan will soon feature a new tented spa area with two treatment rooms and an outdoor mineral pool overlooking the weir and escarpment. The addition is expected to be completed later in 2025 and is sure to enhance the Mount Mulligan experience.
